Next Meeting 9/21/2010 at Tamarack Nature Center in White Bear

Hi.  Welcome to our new members!  Our next meeting is this Tuesday, September 21st, at the Tamarack Nature Center in White Bear.  We will meet at 5:30 for potluck and 6:30 for the meeting.  The address is 5287 Otter Lake Road, off of hwy. 96, very close to 35E.  Google Tamarack Nature CenterMN, for a map.

Things to remember:

Bring a nature-themed quilt for our exhibit at Tamarack starting mid-October.  It should include a hanging stick with holes on each end.  Be sure your name and the name of the quilt are on the back.  If you prefer to wait and give your piece to Nancy Mambi or John Stein at the Textile Center, please have it to them by Oct. 8th.  The exhibit will run through November.

Bring white paper or a sketchbook and a soft lead pencil or #6 ebony pencil.  Karen Wallach will lead us in a short sketching session, using the displays at the nature center as our subjects.

Bring show and tell.  Word is spreading how great the show and tell is at our meetings so you don’t want to be left out.

Bring food to share.

Cyndi Kaye has proposed a challenge to us all.  She is trying to get the blog to be a regular stop for people so she is asking you to leave a comment on her query on the blog.  Those who do so by Tuesday morning will be entered in a drawing for a set of six iridescent paint stiks.  That is a huge prize!   The address is www.saqamn.blogspot.com.

In November the meetings will go to Saturday mornings for the winter.  The next meeting is November 20th at the Textile Center.

See you this Tuesday!!  Susan Stein

UFO's

Today, a group of fiber artists questioned the meaning of "UFO's", those art pieces that you start but can't seem to finish. Do we really need to finish every art quilt we start? Is it a character flaw? Do deadlines effect how likely you are to finish a piece? How can we set ourselves up for success (completion) in the future? Please respond on the subject at the blog site. We will give away a set of Shiva Iridescent Primary Color Paintsticks (6 pack) at the next meeting, September 21, 2010. Winners will be drawn from name of SAQA MN members who respond to this blog inquiry.

July Meeting Update. New Location: Textile Center

Summer greetings:

The July 27th, 2010 meeting has been changed to the Textile Center. http://www.textilecentermn.org We will have a social hour from 5:30 - 6:30. Bring a dish or beverage to share. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM. Please bring what you have been working on.

The reason for the change is that I had the opportunity to extend my Asia trip to visit Korea. While there, I will be networking with the new regional representative for Korea, Mi-Sik Kim. I will also be looking at potential venues for a SAQA exhibit in Seoul, Korea. It is an exciting opportunity for SAQA and myself, so I hope you will forgive me for the change in venue.

Some exciting opportunities for you:

Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition applications are due this Monday, July 19th. The application takes five minutes and no photo is needed. We need more fiber entered, the media is selected as a percentage of all entries. See the details at: http://www.mnstatefair.org/competition/fine_arts.html

The Textile Center is accepting applications for the juried Holiday Show. Details at http://www.textilecentermn.org/gallery.asp

If you have other exciting news you would like to share, let me know and I can send it out via email and on our blog.

SNOW DYEING,

Susan recommended this site http://artaddworksforme.blogspot.com/ The log inspired me to give it a try! The snow, dye, and the fabric are working their magic as I type. We have so much snow that it is great to have a creative outlet for it! I will post some pictures.

Reminder that the opening for Foot in the Door is this Thursday at the MIA.

Today I ran into several SAQA members at the Textile Center. The member show is great but ends February 20, 2010.

January Get Together

January 1, 2010

Dear MN SAQA members,

Happy New Year!  I hope your artistic journey leads you into exciting places this year.  As always, Cyndi Kaye and I would love to hear from you about your ideas for get-togethers and programs in the coming year.  Our plan is to arrange something for every other month.  Meanwhile, Cyndi Kaye, the computer queen, is working on our blog- http://saqamn.blogspot.com/.  It’s not up to date at the moment, but add it to your favorites list for future information.

The plan for January has changed.  Due to the fact that the opening for Common Threads at the Textile Center includes a light supper and annual meeting, we thought we would separate our SAQA meeting from that event.  Instead, we are going to meet for coffee at Cyndi Kaye’s in Roseville on Saturday, January 23rd at10:00.  We’ll do show and tell and talk about your ideas for 2010, if you have any.  We will also talk about the SAQA exhibit at the June MQ show, for which entries will be due in March.  After the meeting, it is just a short trip over to the Textile Center for those who want to see the exhibit.

We hope you’ll all join us and show us what you’re working on.

Email Cyndi for her address and a google map.
